Overview
The Division of Geriatrics at UCSF has received funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)/Bureau of Health Professions to expand its Geriatrics Fellowships to include a two-year multidisciplinary program in Geriatric Medicine, Dentistry and Psychiatry. The program provides training for internists, family practitioners, psychiatrists and dentists seeking to increase the diversity and cultural competence of health professionals caring for elders in underserved communities. The mission of the program is to prepare fellows from all three disciplines with the skills needed for a culturally sensitive, teaching-focused career in geriatrics with the goal of improving access to health care and decreasing health disparities for all populations. Fellows from internal medicine, family medicine and psychiatry will be eligible for Board Certification in Geriatrics upon completion of twelve months of clinical training.
Training
A core curriculum includes training in teaching, leadership, educational scholarship and research, ethnic and cultural diversity, and clinical experiences with underserved older adult populations. Discipline-specific curricula complete the program. Clinical training sites throughout the San Francisco Bay Area reflect the city’s celebrated diversity.
Eligibility
One fellow from each discipline – either internal medicine or family medicine, psychiatry and dentistry – will enter the program each year. Potential fellows must meet the following criteria:
- Geriatric Medicine: completion of a residency program in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine
- Geriatric Dentistry: completion of one year of postdoctoral dental education and/or at least two years of comparable practice experience
- Geriatric Psychiatry: completion of a residency program in General Psychiatry
- Applicants must be in possession of a valid license to practice medicine or dentistry in the State of California
- The Multidisciplinary Geriatrics Fellowship is only open to applicants who are United States citizens or permanent residents
Specific selection criteria include interest in an academic career in geriatrics and meeting specific requirements of the individual programs. Priority may be given to applicants who plan to practice with underserved populations.
