Welcome to the UCSF Aging and Palliative Care Interest Group!
This interdisciplinary student interest group was established in 2005* to foster interest and enthusiasm in the care of older adults and improve clinical competence in palliative care and geriatric medicine.
Goals
To supplement the required curriculum with didactic and experiential learning opportunities in geriatrics
- Note: In 2008 the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) published Geriatrics Competencies for Medical Students. Many of these are not yet addressed in the core curriculum. One of the missions of this group is to give students the training they’ll need to take good care of older adults who are both the fastest growing segment of the US population and disproportionate users of medical care.
To provide a link between students and faculty advisors who can help with:
- pre-clinical activities including conferences and shadowing
- research and project opportunities
- clinical rotations
- career advice
- how and why to become a geriatrician
- alternatives to geriatrics which involve caring for the elderly
- palliative care
- community activism, advocacy and service to older adults
- summer fellowships
To provide online links to resources helpful to students studying and caring for older adults
* From 2005-2008, the group was known as the Geriatrics Interest Group. In the summer of 2008, Palliative Care was added and the focus was changed from geriatrics to aging
